Innovation with a purpose

Main innovation highlights

The innovation strategy is to access a global network of ecosystems and contacts, formed by startups, organizations, universities, associations, investors, among others, capable of strengthening our initiatives on this front. The innovation concept was reinforced with the creation of the Inova Klabin movement and the inauguration of the Technology Center in Paraná.

Plug and Play: partnership with one of the main startup accelerators in the world, based in Silicon Valley. The cooperation, as one of the supporting companies for Plug and Play’s first office in South America, in São Paulo, opens doors to a global contact network made up of startups, corporations and investors, which will strengthen our initiatives.

Pitch Day: seeks differentiated technologies that are sustainable and innovative to solve company challenges. Seven pitches were made on the following themes: biological control of leafcutter ants; reduction of plastic packaging in Shipping and Warehouse; improvement of the Quality System for bag equipment; tertiary sludge (waste generated in production); and three editions focused on Research and Development.

Klabin Lab: fosters internal corporate entrepreneurship, which brings employees together from a wide variety of areas and locations, for a five-day immersion to find solutions to various problems. Four projects in 2019 produced results for the Company, focused on travel accountability, clarity in the visualization of customer credits and the development of Forestry Map (technology that is being approved) for installation in forest logistics trucks.

Klabin +U: provides solutions in partnership with national and international universities. Consists of immersing students in Klabin’s operational routine so they can evaluate, try out and develop innovative and sustainable solutions for the packaging market. Four projects with engineering students at the Federal University of Technology in Paraná were initiated from the program, involving concepts of Industry 4.0, Artificial Intelligence and Predictive Analyses. A competition between Masters in Business Administration (MBAs) was also conducted to design new business models for one of our products, generating excellent insights, attended by the universities of Harvard, Insead, Asian Management Institute, Calgary and University of California (USC).

Plant your Idea: an opportunity for employees to engage in Klabin’s improvement and innovation process. In search of real innovation results, the program, which emerged from the Climate Survey, works as an open idea channel aligned with the strategic needs of each unit, using new technologies such as chat bot, artificial intelligence and innovation management tools to ensure everyone’s participation at all levels of the organization at any time. It was conducted as a pilot at the Lages Unit (SC) and later implemented at the Operational Planning, Logistics and Supply Department and at the Monte Alegre Unit (PR). It is expected to cover all units in 2020.

Value partnerships

The partnership established with universities and research centers in Brazil and abroad has been instrumental in the search for solutions focused on market needs. The 2019 award for a nanofiber project stands out, developed in partnership with the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), at the International Conference on Nanotechnology for Renewable Materials, held in Japan in June 2019. The work involved research to optimize nanofiber production and reduce energy consumption in this process.
